• The itinerary.  It hit the main UNESCO sites in just 9 days, and ran from a Saturday to a Sunday so that only 1 week of time needed to be taken off work.  It would have been nice to visit more areas and stay longer—there are other tours for that–but the extra time wasn’t an option for me then.
• The must-see attractions are seen efficiently and with minimal hassle. No waiting for buses, no standing in line for tickets, no trying to figure things out in a foreign language.  Someone else does all the grunt work.
• Hotels are all pre-selected superior hotels and feature comforting amenities.  I adored the buffet breakfasts, which included plenty of fresh fruit as well as dim sum and other local delicacies but also American bacon-and-eggs and made-to-order omelette options.
• A guide/”local friend” shows you around, teaches you how to bargain, and reminds you to be careful of pickpockets.  The guide fills you in on history and traditions and provides insight into their country.  Ours answered questions that allowed us a glimpse into their daily life.  Tour guides must get relicensed each year and so do keep up on changes and provide current information.
• The tour bus.  I would call it a mini-bus.  It had plenty of room, big windows, and was easy in and out.  I really dislike smaller vans.
• The hand-holding.  I know I would not like to visit China my first time on my own.  A tour is a must.
• The exercise.  I expected a tour of China to be exhausting.  So much is crammed into each day that I would fall exhausted into a deep sleep each night.
• The price.  I think the price for the air, hotels, admissions, guide, bus, and most meals is a real bargain.

Day 1 San Francisco - Beijing

 Meet in San Francisco International Airport a to Beijing. The journey takes about 12 hours, meals and drinks provided on plane.

 

 Direct flight to Beijing Air China CA986, 1:50pm to 6pm+1.

 Meals on board.

Day 2 Beijing

English-speaking local guide will meet you on arrival at Beijing airport. You will be assisted with baggage handling and transferred to your hotel. Your guide will hand out English map of Beijing. Upon arrival at hotel, you will be assisted for check-in. Chinese
dinner at local restaurant.

Day 3 Beijing

 American style buffet breakfast at the hotel. In the morning, visit Temple of Heaven. Then drive to Jade Museum for a visit. After a Chinese lunch at a local restaurant, spend the afternoon at the Great Wall. Enjoy Peking Roasted Duck dinner.

Day 4 Beijing

 After breakfast, your guide will pick you up and drive to Tian An Men Square. Visit Tian An Men Square and walk to Forbidden City and enter through the South Gate. After touring the Forbidden City, enjoy Cantonese lunch. In the afternoon, visit Summer Palace. Visit a pearl store before returning to the hotel.

Day 5 Beijing - Xian

 Full buffet breakfast at the hotel. You will be escorted to the airport and fly to Xian. Upon arrival at Xian Airport, you will be greeted by your local guide and assisted with baggage, and transferred to the city. You will be served mineral water and provided with English map en route with program orientation. Upon arrival in the city, visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, drive to the Southern Gate of the Old City Wall. Drive to your hotel for check-in. Special Dumpling Banquet Dinner at a local restaurant.

 

Fly to Xian, Air China CA1223, 12:20pm to 14:30pm.

Day 6 Xian

 Buffet breakfast at the hotel. Visit Terra Cotta Warriors Museum at the excavation site. Have lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the Muslim area and the bazaar. Balance of the day is at leisure. Evening is open. You can enjoy Western dinner at hotel or try one of unique local restaurants and stroll the night market. Or taken an optional dinner show that include dinner, Tang dynasty show and round trip transfers.

Day 7 Xian - Shanghai

 Buffet breakfast at the hotel. In the morning take flight to Shanghai. Local guide will meet you in the airport and hand out English maps of Shanghai and water. Visit the Bund, Yuyuan Garden. Enjoy the shopping in silk store. Drive to hotel and check in to your room. Balance of the day is at leisure.

Day 8 Shanghai

 American buffet breakfast at the hotel. Day is free. Explore the famous shopping districts, or visit Shintiandi (New World). The group will meet in the lobby in the evening for Huangpu River Cruise and Shanghai style farewell dinner.

Day 9 Shanghai - San Francisco

 American buffet breakfast at the hotel. You will be picked up and transferred to the airport with assistance of your baggage. Fly back and arrive at SFO on the same day.
